UM Innovations endeavours to support the University’s Centre of Excellence in Value Creation by empowering entrepreneurs among Universiti Malaya’s research and academic talents who have excelled in R&D. This involves nurturing and enhancing the revenue and profitability of business pods and spin-off companies. UMH encourages lecturers to explore the commercialization potential of their research, aiming to monetize and extract value from the University’s extensive innovation assets and intellectual capital. 

Introducing UM Innovations (UMI), the dynamic catalyst for translating research and development breakthroughs into impactful solutions. Founded in 2017, UMI operates as an incubator company, strategically positioned to bridge the gap between innovative R&D outputs and their journey to full commercialization. With a clear mandate to provide a robust service platform, deliver pre-spinoff programs, and oversee the incubation and acceleration of business pods, UMI plays a pivotal role in streamlining the pathway from innovation to market readiness. 

At the heart of UMI’s mission is the Business & Service Pods initiative—a pioneering program designed to harness the collective expertise of the UM community and transform it into commercial reality. By nurturing collaboration and entrepreneurship, UMI facilitates the translation of ideas and research into viable commercial ventures, fostering growth and innovation every step of the way. 

For members of the UM community with entrepreneurial aspirations, UMI collaborates closely with the UM Centre of Innovation and Enterprise (UMCIE) to provide tailored support for startup ventures. From guidance on business development to mentorship and access to resources, UMI and UMCIE empower aspiring entrepreneurs to bring their vision to life.
